Reasons for mental health concerns in teens

Being a teenager has never been easy, but today's youth face increasing challenges that can significantly impact their mental health and well-being. The transition to high school, in particular, can be a vulnerable time as students navigate new academic, social, and personal pressures.

In Fond du Lac County, the need for youth mental health support is clear. According to the 2025 Fond du Lac County Suicide Death Review Team Annual Report, 31 suicide deaths were recorded, with nearly one in five (18%) occurring among individuals age 25 and younger. This represents a sharp increase from the previous year, when individuals age 25 and younger accounted for just 6% of suicide deaths. In 2025, this age group ranked third in suicide deaths, tied with adults age 60 and older.

Among high school students, the warning signs are equally concerning. The 2022 Fond du Lac County Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 16% of high school students had seriously considered suicide during the previous year—equivalent to approximately four students in a classroom of 25. Additionally, 31% of students reported feeling sad or hopeless almost every day for at least two weeks, a key indicator of depression. Female students were more than twice as likely as male students to report these feelings.

These numbers represent more than statistics—they represent young people in our schools, on our teams, and in our neighborhoods who may be struggling in silence. Early identification, prevention, and access to support can make a life-changing difference. Programs that promote early screening, intervention, and connection to resources can help ensure that young people receive support before a crisis occurs.

Who does YScreen Reach?

Since the program’s inception in 2002, more than 16,000 area youth have participated in YScreen.
